On September 22, the City of Toronto's proclaimed Urban Agriculture Week, and the National Forest Week, intersect!
Come see our school gardens and sign up for a free tree! Trees are variable species and sizes, and are required to be planted within the City of Toronto boundary. You'll need to fill out a form to reserve your tree(s). See below for more details!
The tour starts from Sherbourne TTC station at 1 pm on Sunday, September 22. From there, we'll walk over to Rose Avenue Public School, at 675 Ontario Street, and see the gardens and tree nursery. It's amazing how effective a small and shady school garden can be, in connecting students who live in the high-rise community of St. James Town, to the natural world and shade-tolerant garden foods, in this limited green space. We'll be there at about 1:15 for 15 minutes.
Continuing south, we'll arrive at Winchester Jr & Sr. Public School community garden by about 1:40, at the corner of Rose Avenue and Winchester Street. This is a large garden! and will soon be undergoing a re-structuring as the school completes a capital project for the whole school grounds. We will talk about the plans, and the 24-year history of this food-producing garden, complete with raised beds, composting, fruit trees and many stories of student engagement.
We'll then make our way south to Sprucecourt PS garden, which also houses a small tree nursery, a lean-to greenhouse, and many raised beds for food production. We'll get there by about 2:45 pm. This is a lovely garden right in front of the school, at 70 Spruce Street, with fantastic engagement by so many teachers and students.
As we continue south, we'll walk through the Regent Big Park where a City-owned greenhouse stands, and which we use in early spring. It's adjacent to the Community Gardens, where we have a plot, dedicated to our tree seedlings and their plant-friends!
Finally, by 3:40 we will arrive at Daniels Spectrum, 585 Dundas St. E., where on the third floor you can view our production garden growing on the rooftop. We'll have some snacks and giveaways, plus your trees will be available to take home from there (assuming you filled out the form above!)
If you have any questions, please contact us at info@greenthumbsto.org, with "Garden Tour" or "Tree Giveaway" in the subject line. We are grateful to the Urban Forestry Department of the City of Toronto for funding to plant trees from seed with students in our partner schools, and to the Toronto District School Board for the garden spaces and utilities.
