This week wraps up my first semester at Green Thumbs! I am a first-year placement student coming from York University, and I feel as though I hit the jackpot by getting to come and assist programs every Thursday. I was immediately interested in the opportunity to work with students in the outdoors, and teach them about nature, gardening, wildlife, and nutrition. As a nature-loving teacher candidate, I couldn’t have gotten blessed with a better placement.
We have just completed 8 weeks at Frankland Community School, and I have met so many wonderful teachers and students. I had so much fun working those jam-packed days of 6 back-to-back programs, led by our program leader, Ella, and assisted by myself and Hannah, another placement student from York. Ella has been a great role model, as she is extremely knowledgeable and great with the kids - funny and sweet, but firm when needed. I love her style of teaching. My favourite days at Frankland were those where we could get really hands-on. I had the opportunity to co-lead a garlic planting program, which was definitely a highlight. The kids had so much fun picking a garlic clove to plant and getting their fingers in the dirt.
I also had the pleasure of assisting a couple of programs at Rose Avenue Public School, where I will be spending a lot more time in the New Year. I enjoyed learning from Aiden, our Indigenous program coordinator, who led the programs at Rose. Our tree nursery is located at Rose as well, and another fun challenge for me was getting to tend to it. Tristan, our youth program leader, helped me immensely with this task. He showed me how to plant the trees, and gave me a lesson on how to identify all the different types of trees we were planting.
I am so grateful for all the students I have met, and to the amazing team at Green Thumbs, who have already taught me so much! I can’t wait to continue my learning in 2025.
