Green Thumbs Growing Kids – Summer Youth Employment and Training Program

GTGK’s mission is to work with children, youth and families to grow and prepare garden-fresh foods, cultivated in an environmentally sustainable manner, in hands-on programs. We cultivate community in the downtown east neighbourhoods of St. James Town, Cabbagetown and Regent Park. Three summer jobs are available for youth returning to school in the fall. The jobs are all the same, as follows: Garden Program Leader(s) You are a team player with initiative and good communication skills. Work will involve leading workshops for other youth, young children and families. The job will also involve garden maintenance such as weeding, watering and replanting. Garden experience is preferred. Students will be fully trained and oriented to each site at 3 primary schools. Bilingual (French and English) preferred, and newcomer youth and youth from racialized or visible minorities especially welcome to apply. Wage rate = $11.25/hour for 32 hour week. Some shifts will be split, eg. 9 am to 12 noon and 4 pm – 8 pm on the same day. Six week contract starts July 4 and ends on August 19, 2011.
