Summer Jobs!

Green Thumbs Growing Kids is a garden and food education non-profit based in the St. Jamestown neighbourhood. Through hands-on programs and engaging learning opportunities, we work with urban children, youth and their families to grow and prepare fresh foods in an environmentally sustainable manner.

We are hiring 6 summer staff for summer 2017, in two roles. Please see the positions below.

POSITION 1: Community Garden Program Leader

POSITION 2: Community Garden Program Assistant

 

POSITION 1: Community Garden Program Leader

June 26 – August 24, $13/hr  (30 hours/week)

Green Thumbs is seeking 2 candidates under 30 to assist us with maintaining our 4 gardens, and play a leading/supervisory role in running our summer gardening programs.

DUTIES:

  • Lead summer program staff in developing and facilitating fun and educational programs for young children in school gardens
  • Assist with general garden maintenance of 4 garden sites, including: weeding, watering, harvesting, compost management, rainwater catchment systems, garden construction and repair.
  • Support GTGK’s family garden programming and community outreach initiatives (e.g. Family drop in and seniors gardening programs)
  • Support GTGK at the Regent Park Farmer’s Market on Wednesdays (help prepare with harvesting and transporting flowers or other promotional items; support other vendors with load in and load out, set up table and talk about GTGK with community members)
  • Assist with program administration, including documentation, photography and social media outreach

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience developing and leading children’s recreation programs
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions and maintain high energy levels
  • Knowledge and interest in gardening, food, and/or urban agriculture
  • Willingness to try new things and get your hands dirty!
  • Experience supervising and engaging children
  • Ability to work collaboratively with excellent communication skills
  • Residence or knowledge of St. Jamestown or Regent Park an asset
  • Participation in the Urban Roots Youth program an asset
  • Ability to speak both English and French preferred, other languages reflective of the community an asset
  • Ability to ride a bike is an asset!
  • Supervisory experience is an asset.
  • Must be aged 15 to 30 years and are full-time students intending to return to their studies in the next school year.

POSITION 2: Community Garden Program Assistant

June 26 – August 24, $11.40/hr (30 hours/week)

Green Thumbs is seeking 4 youth under 30 to assist us with maintaining our 4  gardens, and play a leading role in facilitating our summer gardening programs.
DUTIES:

  • Assist with general garden maintenance for 4 garden sites, including: weeding, watering, harvesting, compost management, rainwater catchment systems, garden construction and repair.
  • Support the program leader in developing and leading fun and educational programs for young children in school gardens
  • Support GTGK’s family garden programming and community outreach initiatives (e.g. Family drop in and seniors gardening programs)
  • Represent GTGK as needed at the Regent Park Farmer’s Market on Wednesday evenings (help prepare with harvesting and transporting flowers or other promotional items; support other vendors with load in and load out, set up table and talk about GTGK with community members)
  • Assist with program administration, including documentation, photography and social media outreach

  • Basic interest or understanding in gardening, food, and/or urban agriculture
  • Willingness to try new things and get your hands dirty!
  • Experience supervising and engaging children
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Ability to work collaboratively with excellent communication skills
  • Residence or intimate knowledge of St. Jamestown or Regent Park an asset
  • Participation in the Urban Roots Youth program an asset
